What's So Special?
Homemade sauce is vastly superior to sauce in a plastic bottle in the syrup aisle at Publix! It is easy to make in 15 minutes or keep on hand in the fridge.
Ingredients and Substitutions
Hot fudge sauce only has a few ingredients.
Unsweetened Chocolate
The bars are 4 ounces, which is inconvenient because you will have leftovers, but it does keep until you are ready to make more
Butter
Unsalted or salted is fine. A pinch of salt brings out the flavor of the sweetness and there is very little butter in the recipe.
Pure Vanilla Extract
It’s important to use the real deal, not artificially flavored vanilla extract.
How to Make hot fudge sauce
It is very easy to burn the chocolate and give it a bitter taste, so cooking on low, over steam, prevents this from happening.
Cook it Slow
For years, we used this improvised setup with a bowl over a saucepan full of water, and it worked just fine! But now I have a fancy pan from William Sonoma, my favorite store. You can buy one at Amazon for less than half the price.

What can be better than homemade hot fudge? It is easy and tastes great over ice cream, brownies, and our favorite flourless chocolate cake. And the best part? It stays good in the fridge for weeks, if it lasts that long.
Ingredients
5 ounces unsweetened chocolate
1 tablespoon butter
1/3 cup boiling water
3/4 cup sugar
2 tablespoons light corn syrup
1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
pinch of salt
1 dash brandy, optional
SERVE WITH
vanilla ice cream
whipped cream
maraschino cherries
Instructions
- Gather all of your ingredients and fashion a double boiler if you don’t have one. A stainless steel or glass bowl over a small saucepan filled with water works perfectly.
- Heat the pan on medium-low heat, hot enough to create steam but not hot enough to burn the chocolate. Add the butter and chocolate and stir until it is completely melted.
- Whisk in the boiling water and it will thicken up and get pasty.
- Then, add the sugar, corn syrup, and a pinch of salt. Stir. At first you will see the grains of sugar, but as you stir and as the sugar melts, the sauce becomes smooth and shiny.
- Lastly, add the vanilla and brandy.
- Serve over vanilla ice cream or flourless chocolate cake.
Notes
Keep it warm on the cooktop or mini warmer until you are ready to serve. Serve over ice cream with whipped cream and a cherry!
