Sweet potato is an unusual ingredient for chili, but it really works with the spice mixture. There is some nutmeg, cinnamon, and cocoa powder, which combine to make an interesting combination that you will want to make again and again.

Ingredients

1.5 lbs ground turkey

2 cups sweet potatoes, peeled and cubed into 1” pieces

1 cup onion

3 cloves garlic, minced

SPICE MIXTURE

1.5 teaspoon cumin

1.5 teaspoon chili powder

1 teaspoon cocoa powder

1/2 teaspoon cinnamon

1/2 teaspoon paprika

1 bay leaf

CANNED GOODS

10 oz can Rotel tomatoes, mild

14.5 oz can fire-roasted tomatoes

15 oz can beans, pinto, drained and rinsed

8 oz tomato sauce

3/4 cup water

TOPPINGS

fresh cilantro, stems removed, chopped

sour cream

shredded cheddar cheese

hot sauce, like Cholulu

crusty bread

Instructions

  1. Prepare the spice mixture. Combine spices in a small bowl and set aside.
  2. Brown the turkey. Break apart the turkey into small pieces and brown all the way through over medium heat, then drain any excess fat into a disposable container. Do not put grease down the drain!
  3. Add the onion, garlic, and spices. Cook until the onion is translucent and the spices are incorporated, 10-15 minutes.
  4. Add all of the canned ingredients and the sweet potato. Stir together gently and simmer on low for 30-40 minutes until the potatoes are soft. Remove bay leaf and serve.
